A Good Basic Wedding Schedule

Planning the perfect event is all about timing and weddings are no different. It is important that you begin the task of planning your wedding by setting a schedule and a time line for what you need to do and when you need to have it done.

Basic Wedding Schedule

12 Months Out

  • Find (and book) a location
  • Choose attendants
  • Begin financial planning for your married life
  • Choose services (caterer, wedding consultant, photographer, videographer, florist, band)
  • Begin pre-marriage counseling

6 Months Out

  • Find wedding attire (tuxedos, gowns)
  • Plan honeymoon
  • Purchase items for a Trousseau - clothes for the honeymoon and life after marriage
  • Find an officiate for the wedding (if the locations does not provide one).
  • Order invitations
  • Begin looking for a married home (if necessary)

4 Months Out

  • Plan the rehearsal dinner (if you are choosing a well known location you may need to book the event even earlier).
  • Make arrangements for out of town guests (reserve blocks of rooms, plan welcome baskets, plan outings between or before events).
  • Meet with caterer and florist
  • Buy wedding rings
  • Address invitations (but do NOT mail yet)
  • Find out about the wedding license and any other requirements that you might need (blood test, medical exam).
  • Arrange transportation for the wedding party
  • Order the cake

2 Months Out

  • Meet again with different services and finalize plans
  • Buy gifts for wedding party and other special people
  • Write a letter to each other and to each other’s parents (to be given at the end of the rehearsal dinner and as you are leaving)

6 Weeks Out

  • Mail invitations (reserve one to have mailed to you on the day of the wedding as a keepsake)
  • Send announcements to papers
  • Get fittings for wetting attire
  • Choose readings for ceremony and send to those that are reading
  • Make a list of all the pictures that you want to be taken (a special one with you and your nephew) along with the standard pictures – be sure to check if there is any extra charge for the special pictures

2 Weeks Out

  • Have final fitting
  • Have final meeting with services and location
  • Get the marriage license
  • Get or make wedding favors

1 Week Out

  • Finalize guest list (call any one that has no t responded
  • Make a list of any questions or concerns that you have so that you do not forget in the hectic days ahead

The thing that will make your wedding the best it can be will be to relax and enjoy all that goes on. Expect things to happen – there are too many people involved for something NOT to come up – and refuse to let any thing stand in the way of your joy.
