Weeding speeches can be traced back in history as far as ancient Greece, where Choricius of Gaza, a Greek philosopher, became famous for his beautiful speeches delivered to brides and grooms.
Wedding speeches became an American tradition, where close friends and relatives greet the newlyweds.
Today where most of the weddings are taped in DVD and later distributed to family and friends, It became necessary to better prepare such speeches in order to avoid pitfalls and future embarrassment.
A couple of simple rules must always be followed to avoid problems :
1- Avoid alcohol intake at all costs before delivering a speech.
2- The speech must have a brief introduction and a clear outcome.
3- To Include a brief story or memory involving the couple.
4- A bit of humor.
5- The length of the speech should be between 4 and 7 minutes.
Delivering a public speech can be a little scary to many of us. I have personally helped many brides, grooms, best men and maids of honor to give wedding speeches that are simple but yet effective and flawless delivered.
Dealing with anxiety is another important issue. Remember a few things :
There is no reason to be afraid since during a wedding you know most of the audience. You will probably never met again those in the audience that you do not know.
It is important to select the topic of your speech beforehand. Being comfortable about a topic will reduce your anxiety level.
Learning to relax and practicing deep breath techniques are the ways professional speakers prepare themselves.
