Wedding invitations are one of the most important messages, save baby announcements, that anyone will ever send out. As such, their creation and messaging should be methodically planned and elegantly executed. There are several methods of printing invitation cards, but nothing compares in terms of intricacy and elegance to the letterpress print.
The letterpress printing process is tied to a time in history when marriages were announced by town criers who would post the written invitation in a public square. The tradition of the printed invitation evolved over time between landed gentry who could afford to pay monks to prepare exquisite, handwritten invitations. After the invitation of the printing press circa 1439, invitations could be enjoyed by an ever growing cross-section of the population.
Letterpress print is based on the age old knowledge of relief or embossed printing plates that were earlier carved from wood. The four hundred year old technology was mastered by many and this expertise is still found in the letterpress printers of today. The wedding invitations printed by using wooden blocks can be attributed to the Far East artisans of eight century and its influence in Europe from the 15th Century.
When paper or cloth is printed using letterpress equipment the resultant raised printed surface is quite crisp. It comes from the impressions created on the plate used for printing. As with rubber stamping the letterpress block is inked and the impression transferred to cloth, paper, parchment, plastic sheet etc. In case of multi color printing one need to have adequate expertise in this type of printing process and a few people only can really create this now.
The modern letterpress printing process for wedding invitations is highly advanced and expertise available for designing as well as translating letterpress characters on a variety of substrates, adorning them with ribbons, and utilizing motifs or special assembly that would appeal to almost all tastes from the couple getting married to the people who receive the special invitations.
The important wedding invitations need to be printed by experienced craftsperson and there are several who still practice the art of the letterpress!
